Darfur, Sudan - Adult Literacy Classes

In the aftermath of the 21-year civil war in Sudan, which officially came to an end in 2005, the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, and particularly in Darfur region, continues to grow.  This critical situation affects more than 3.5 million people, including more than 2 million living in camps for "internally displaced people" (IDPs).  In addition to food, safe water, and basic medical care, much is needed to assist the afflicted to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

OUR PARTNER

ZOA Refugee Care (ZOA) began working in Darfur in 2004.  An integrated project was started in the camps in Greida in 2004, and in Ajura in 2005.  Thereafter, ZOA support was extended to three more IDP camps around Nayala town.
ZOA delivers basic services such as sanitation improvements, hygiene changes, restoration of livelihoods, and food production, and it supports communities in better managing their natural resources through participatory forums.  ZOA promotes community based peace building and conflict resolution

THE PROJECT

In this setting, CRWRF is assisting ZOA in an adult literacy program in the Buram and Nayala regions where they are establishing 15 new learning centres.  Funds will be used to construct and maintain facilities, purchase learning materials and equipment, train teachers, foster capacity building, and to support project monitoring and supervision.
This program will provide and opportunity for 3000 adults to access education so that they can better cope with present displacement and prepare themselves for integration when they returnto their communities.
